ACROSS WHEN DISCUSSING WRITING AND GRAMMAR when discussing writing and grammar recommendedI hope you find my review helpful Emphasises clarity and usage over pedantry but simmers with a whiff of political correctness and a touch of get over it His actual words in g Frankenstein fictional scientist vs a monster are give it up The whole point of the tale was the process the hope the disillusionment the flawed outcome all of which is somewhat lost if it s just the monster and leads also to a loss of inference if we talk of socialism as having Frankenstein Frankenstinian if you will tendencies with unanticipated conseuences or using it to describe uite aptly *the risks and hopes of atomic power or genetically modified foodsStill if Cybermen are way scarier Frankensteins *risks and hopes of atomic

This is well written clear and makes good sense It is also interesting to read the author s thoughts as he interprets a variety of prose I m just not sure we needed another grammar book not nough here is fresh I thoroughly njoyed this book Its section on classic style in particular is highly insightfulHowever I agree with others that this is not a
"read for someone "for someone only a casual interest in the subject or someone looking for a prescriptive guide to writing well you need a real delight in language and its use to push on to the nd So yes some of it is uite hard going But speaking of the Ménopause : la vérité sur les hormones end for me the last few paragraphs on the principles governing critical thinking and factual diligence were worth the price of the book alone Wise and powerful advice for any thoughtful person whether a writer or not Straight off I would have to uery thesteemed professor s semantics Steven Pinker s book is less about writing with a *sense of style than making sense of English grammarThe first couple *of style than making sense of English grammarThe first couple chapters are superb and much the sort of thing I was La Ménopause expecting Professor Pinker gives usxamples of writers prose and xplains to us what makes them so good
The remainder and bulk of the book is an xamination of grammar usage and punctuationremainder and bulk of the book is an Vaincre l'hypoglycémie : Guide pour se guérir des mauvais sucres examination of grammar usage and punctuation chapter featuring tree diagrams of sentence structure isxceedingly complicated and it must be said Le livre des biorythmes extremely boring Personally I would have liked to have heard about prosody defined by the author in hisxcellent glossary as the melody timing and rhythm of speech Not keen on that Oxford comma myselfFortunately Steven Pinker is a very Tout savoir sur le plaisir anal (pour lui) entertaining writer he throws in jokes and witty asides and some very funny cartoons It is certainly unusual to find Yiddishisms in a guide to writing better English He is pleasingly relaxed about the rules too above all writers should make themselves clear to their readers. What is the secret of good prose Does it matter in an age of digital media In this witty mindxpanding book about the art and science of writing well Steven Pinker shows that good style isn't just about rules it's about mpathy coherence and adding. .
If a sentence has to be read through a second time it hasn t worked All in all I would say this is a worthwhile addition to the reference bookshelfthough the professor has made me nervous about my writing rather than confident I m pretty sure this was not his intention Changes not just the way you write one writes but how you one thinks about the words their order and the structure of the logic of the writing itself A bit wordy and perhaps Pinker tries too hard to make the case by overstating the case and perhaps seeking to look relevant by picking uirky xamples Are all birds herons But this is sensible advice but it is does prove the point that it is harder to write shorter and well May xplain why academic writing is so dense and that is not a comment on the authorsRegretfully I doubt it will have much impact on the turgid
PROSE SO LOVED BY ACADEMICS THOUGH TO BE FAIRso loved by academics though to be fair writing in some journals has proved readily accessible and jargon free So it can be done Bring on open access publishing tooAnyway I m going to rebuy the book read on Kindle so I can index it for my own use This is a very readable style guide until the last chapterPinker has done an xcellent job of creating a readable persuasive style guide to the English language He argues against some out dated writing advice I think this will be the reference to judge style guides againstHowever I found the final chapter to be confusing This contrasted strongly with the preceding chapters I could have been
